3 Reasons to Trim Your Trees

There are many reasons to trim your trees, but we’ll cover some of the most common reasons to trim your trees as we look at moving in to the summer months. Hiring a tree service to trim your trees has many benefits.

  • You have an expert that evaluates your trees and prunes those trees in a healthy and responsible way.
  • Our team cleans your property and will leave it better than we found it.
  • There is no risk of injury. If you try yourself, you may fall, slip or otherwise injury yourself.

Tree Trimming Service

You can trim or prune almost any age of tree, even mature trees.

Reduce Shade and Wind Resistance

Here in the Southlake area, we experience high winds at different times of the year. Sometimes those are related to a storm, but other times, we just have windy days that produce high speed straight-line winds.

By trimming your trees properly the amount of wind resistance is lessened and the likelihood that your tree will be pulled out of the ground or experience damage is less.

With a tree trimmed, it also reduces shade that can allow sunlight for plants, grass and other vegetation below the trees. Allowing sun through is essential for plant life.

Removing Dead Branches

Sometimes wind or weight will cause a branch to break and be unable to receive the nutrients it needs to thrive. That branch eventually dies. As you know, with dead wood, it is more likely to break off in winds or a storm and land in your lawn, on your car, your house or even a neighbors property. Trimming your tree and removing dead branches is important for the protection of your home, property and your neighbors property. Your insurance company will even appreciate your attention to dead branches and consider it to be a reason why tree trimming is important.

Help Trees Grow

Pruning and trimming your trees allows them to grow and flourish. When your tree is trimmed properly, it provides a stronger root structure and can allow younger branches to grow. Once the tree is trimmed there are less needs to fill for the tree, so the nutrients and water it receives can then be distributed to a smaller amount of limbs, helping the newer or smaller limbs to grow faster.

Why Stump Grinding Is Important

Why is stump grinding important? There are many reasons. Stump grinding allows the tree to be leveled without removing the roots. But, before we go in to why you should removed a grind your tree stump, we’ll explain what stump grinding is.

Stump Grinding

What is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding is literally grinding a tree stump. Different from stump removal, stump grinding shaves the tree trunk down to an inch below the soil or more. Stump grinding is generally chosen by most homeowners because it is faster and less expensive.

Reasons to use stump grinding

There are several reasons to use a stump grinding service. Of course, if we perform a tree removal or a tree trimming service for you, we’ll offer to grind the stump. But, if you cut down a tree yourself or maybe you inherited a property with a tree stump, you may need to find a stump grinding service.

Stumps are a Hazard – Having a stump in the middle of a lawn is a hazard. Think about anyone playing or running in the lawn. The stump presents a trip hazard, which could lead to injury. In addition to being a hazard for those running or playing, they can also be a hazard to lawn equipment.

Stumps can cause new tree growth – On occasion a tree stump can sprout, resulting in many small trees growing from the stump. Since this is now growing, the sprouting trees are now pulling nutrients from other areas of the landscape.

Tree Stumps aren’t pretty
– If you want a way to kill the visual appeal of your lawn or landscape, leave a stump in it. The sight of a stump definitely isn’t appealing and really makes a lawn look unattended to.

Stumps attract insects
– If you leave a tree stump, the decaying stump and the roots take a long time to rot. While the decay takes place, it attracts beetles, termites, ants and other wood-eating creatures.

When you remove a tree, remove the stump with it. Stump grinding is one of our most common services. If you need a stump grinding service, please contact us today to schedule a free quote.

Preparing Trees for Ice

It is not secret that the Southlake area like most of DFW can have serous ice storms in February. We may not get any snow, but we’ll get plenty of rain that then freezes or we’ll get sleet. This causes many issues with roads, etc. But, it can also cause serious issues with your trees, plants and other aspects of your outdoor space.

Trees Ice

Properly Trimming Trees

Trees that are not properly trimmed have a greater risk when we receive a lot of ice. The branches are very congested and therefore the ice has more to stick to and weigh down the branches. You’ll recall the ice we had in 2015 in the Southlake area and most of Dallas. That ice storm, we might call it, caused significant damage to many trees. The ice was too heavy and concentrated and the branches couldn’t hold the weight. Once a higher branch breaks, it falls, breaking more branches on the way down.

If you trees are properly pruned and trimmed, the better chance they have of weathering an ice storm. Instead of ice pilling up, the tree is spaced and properly trimmed, allowing ice to fall through and therefore leave less weight on the tree itself.

Of course some trees had the worst scenario occur, the ice was so heavy, combined with wind, the trees were up-rooted.

Fall Tree Trimming

Tree Trimming SouthlakeFall has officially arrived in Southlake, Frisco, Colleyville and surrounding areas. We have even experienced a little bit of an early winter with a few cold fronts. With that we thought we’d provide some tree care ideas and tips to help you through the fall and in to the winter.

Tree Care Tips

Give you tree a drink: While we’ve had an abnormally wet September and October in the Southlake area, you still need to make sure you are giving your trees plenty of water. Eventually the rain we’ve experienced will top and providing trees the water they need to stay healthy is essential.

Rely on Mulch: Mulch can help you tree retain water, and it can add a visual effect to your landscape. In the event we experience snow or ice, an little mulch will give your trees a little extra protection.

Plant Now: Since fall is a time where trees begin to shed their leaves, many people don’t realize it is also a prime time to plant trees. Once cooler weather as set in, it is a perfect time for the soil to stimulate new root growth. Call us today for a tree installation!

Fall is also a great time to prune trees. Tree trimming is very common this time of year and we’d love to help you trim up overgrown trees or trees that experienced damage from storms.

  •

    Pruning Tips

    • Visually Inspect the tree from the top down
    • Use The ⅓ and ¼ Rules of Pruning
    • Never remove more than ¼ of a tree’s crown in a season
    • Main branches should be at least 1/3 smaller than the trunk diameter.
    • For broadleaf trees, don’t prune up from the bottom any more than 1/3 of the tree’s total height.
    • Try to form 2 o’clock or 10 o’clock angles where possible when trimming trees.
    • Remove defective parts before pruning or trimming for form and shape.
    • Don’t worry about protecting pruning cuts. For aesthetics, you may feel better painting large wounds but it doesn’t prevent or reduce decay.
    • Maintain and clean your tools regularly.
    • For high branches use a pole pruner. A major job on a big tree should be done by a professional arborist and tree service.

Our tree service professionals and certified arborits will evaluate your specific trees and property. We will then make a recommendation on trimming your trees in the fall or waiting until a different point in the year.

    Summer Tree Trimming

Tree Trimming SouthlakeSummer is hot right now in the Southlake area. Tree Trimming, stump grinding and most of our other tree services are in full swing. But, what should you do for summer tree trimming? Should you plant trees right now? We’ll help you with those questions. Our team of tree care professionals has years of experience, training and knowledge to help you with your exact need.

    Tree Trimming In Summer
You’ll hear conflicting information about trimming trees in summer. Some may say that you should really only trim a tree while it is dormant. So really, late fall, winter or early spring. In general this is true, but what about circumstances that require more immediate attention? Dead wood, damaged wood or diseased limbs should be trimmed and removed when you see them. If that is in the summer, that is okay. In the event a summer tree trim is needed, make sure you don’t trim more than 25% of the green limbs at one time.

    Tree Planting in Summer
Trees can withstand the summer heat with proper watering and can be planted in the summer months. The only time you should refrain from planting a tree is when the ground is frozen. That doesn’t happen too often in Southlake, but good to keep in mind in case you get a wild hair to plant trees during an ice storm. Once your tree is planted, you can begin to enjoy it immediately, so don’t let the summer heat prevent you from adding a tree to your landscape.

ArborTech Tree Service provides tree care, tree trimming, stump grinding, tree removal and tree planting in Southlake. We have many 5 star reviews from our clients and work with each customer to make sure they are completely satisfied with our service.
